On 2 July, a total solar eclipse was visible over parts of the South Pacific, Chile and Argentina. This year's eclipse was visible over the stargazing mecca of the Elqui Valley – the world's first International Dark Sky Sanctuary – which was named one of Lonely Planet’s top 10 regions in the world to visit in 2019. Thousands of people flocked to areas like Paiguano, a small town that saw more than 25,000 tourists come to see the incredible event.
