Trade the hectic pace and crowded streets of the city for tranquil breezes and friendly fluffy faces – animals like alpacas and baby goats are part of the package deal at these American farm stay rentals. Worried about rustic conditions and having to milk the cows at the crack of dawn? Don't — these working farms have added luxurious accommodations for guests and allow as much (or as little) participation in the workings of the farm as like.
Abbey Road Farm – Oregon
Abbey Road Farm in Oregon is a bed and breakfast, working farm and vineyard that was founded by the owners of a local farm-to-table restaurant who wanted to take their love for food and wine to the next level. You’ll reap the benefits of their knowledge at Sip, the vineyard’s tasting room, and during the (included) multi-course breakfast.
Three former grain silos now serve as guest suites, outfitted with Jacuzzi tubs, heated floors, and plush beds. The hosts will happily take guests on a farm tour to meet the baby goats and other farm animals.
Heritage Farm – Indiana
Think of Indiana’s Heritage Farm as your own personal petting zoo. This animal lover's paradise is home to over 70 alpacas, four goats, several barn cats, a flock of chickens, one black labrador, two Great Pyranees, and one horse.
Farm stay guests can help with feeding the animals, collecting the eggs, or helping out with the farm chores. Rather play than work? There’s a 400-foot zip line on the property to liven things up.
The Inn at Westwynd Farm – Pennsylvania
The Inn at Westwynd Farm is designed for romance. Many of the rooms come with fireplaces and jetted spa tubs, and champagne or chocolate strawberries can be arranged for your arrival. This luxurious bed and breakfast has an emphasis on the breakfast part, with a hearty spread every morning that features delicacies straight from the farm.
Horses, goats, and alpacas roam the expansive grounds at Westwynd Farm, and there are plenty of opportunities for bird-watching at the property’s lake.
Mountain Goat Lodge Goat Farm – Colorado
If you visit the Mountain Goat Lodge in Colorado, you might just fall in love with the farm’s resident goats. Fortunately, the Mountain Goat Lodge has planned for that, and offers classes on raising/rescuing goats (or chickens, if you’re looking to start small). Not ready for that kind of commitment? Sign up for the goat yoga (offered seasonally), where up to 20 baby goats will help you through your flow.
A number of fun lodging options are available for overnight stays, including a tipi, vintage trailer, retro campers, and traditional hotel-style rooms. All rooms include an ultra-fresh breakfast with milk, yogurt, and cheeses made from the farm’s resident goats.
Fort Lewis Lodge & Farm – Virginia
Over 3,300 acres of mountains, forests, fields, and streams make up the Fort Lewis Lodge & Farm in Bath County, Virginia. Log cabins, private houses, and even the farm’s former grain silo (now a three-bedroom suite) are available to rent. A farm-fresh breakfast and dinner is included in each stay, as is access to the lodge’s stargazing platform, wood-fired sauna, swimming hole, and hiking.
To get a taste of country life, guests can visit the working part of the farm and meet the pigs, chickens, and cows that make the experience possible.
Liberty Hill Farm & Inn –Vermont
Liberty Hill Farm & Inn is home to about 270 cows, which means there are plenty of opportunities for bottle-feeding newborn calves or trying your hand at milking. Not adorable enough for you? There are plenty of barn kittens and cats available for snuggles. Just book one of the seven guest rooms available at this farm stay in Vermont’s Green Mountains, where hiking, tubing, cross-country skiing, and fishing opportunities abound.
Los Poblanos - New Mexico
There has been a ranch or farm of some sort on the site of Los Poblanos on the outskirts of Albuquerque, New Mexico since the early 1900s. The current incarnation is a stunning historic inn, built in 1932 by the “Father of Santa Fe Style,” architect John Gaw Meem. Los Poblanos is a working lavender farm, which offers a variety of luxury accommodations, a spa and a restaurant that sources its produce largely from the on-site vegetable garden and from other local organic farms.
Leaping Lamb Farm – Oregon
Leaping Lamb Farm has been a fixture of the Oregon Coast since it was homesteaded in 1862. Today, guests can stay at Leaping Lamb Farm’s sprawling five-bedroom farmhouse or the cozy two-bedroom cottage. If an overnight just isn’t enough time, month-long farm retreats are also available for booking.
The farm’s staff includes chickens (who provide the breakfast eggs), geese, horses, a peacock, lambs, dogs and cats. If they choose, farm stay participants can help with animal feedings, egg collection, fruit picking, and vegetable harvesting.
Atlanta Llama Cottage – Georgia
Atlanta might not be the first place you think of for a farm, but the Atlanta Llama Cottage is just minutes from the downtown area. Surrounded by a bamboo forest, the property feels like a secret oasis in the middle of the city. It’s home to mild-mannered alpacas and llamas, who are treated like beloved pets. Guests at the cottage can feed the animals carrots or pet them on their necks (they hate having their faces touched).
A luxury treehouse is available to rent, as is a barn event space—alpaca-themed wedding, anyone?
North Country Farms - Hawaii
For one of the most beautiful farm stays in the US visit North Country Farms near the town of Kilauea, Hawaii. This family-run organic farm is located close to both the bustling shops and attractions of this historic town, as well as a short ride away from the lush landscape of Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge.
There's a charming 500 square foot cottage for rent on the property, complete with a kitchenette, private bathroom and a variety of entertainment, including a TV. Tours of the 4-acre vegetable farm are available on request for a small fee.
